Introduction

We are starting a large-scale project about “investors magic touch”.
The aim of the project is to define early stage investors who can help you to become unicorn. For this purpose now we have the list of 626 Unicorns since 2000 and 2759 their investors.

As part of research preparation, we will share with you interesting statistics and insights.

Top fund names

Table 1

On Table 1 you can see names of funds with 30+ unicorns in their portfolio. All these funds are well known worldwide and it is not a problem to find their key persons and contacts. But it also means that for all other people it is also very easy to find it. So when contacting these funds you get a lot of competitors, regardless of the scope of their activity, because all of you are fighting for investor time.

…and why they don’t matter

Table 2

You can find names of funds with 30+ unicorns in their portfolio above, you can spend 1 hour and find names with 20–29 unicorns, you can spend 1 day and find names with 10–19 unicorns. Table 2 says that described scope of funds is almost 100 funds. This is real to cover such amount of funds with your fundraising tools, but this is also real for all other startup founders all over the world. So that’s why top fund names are worthless for you.

Picture 1

So the main value in your pursuit of becoming a unicorn is the investors sample which is hidden in the long tail of funds, represented on Picture 1. Even if you assume that 1 unicorn in portfolio is just a randomness, it is still a lot of funds to be analyzed.

Post Scriptum

A lot of thing to be done in this research till the end of 2019 but you can find some data following this shared google spreadsheets: http://bit.ly/2OKo34X
